4️⃣ How to Create a Safe Sleep Environment for Your Baby
Sweet Dreams Start with Safety 😴💤
Every parent wants their baby to sleep soundly — and safely. Creating the right sleep environment helps reduce risks like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and ensures your little one gets peaceful rest.
Here’s how you can make your baby’s sleep space safe, comfy, and cozy.
🛏️ Use a Firm, Flat Mattress
Soft mattresses or cushions increase suffocation risk. Always use a firm crib mattress that fits snugly inside the crib frame with no gaps.
🚫 Keep the Crib Bare
No pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or bumper pads. These items can block airflow or cause accidental suffocation.
🧦 Dress Baby Appropriately
Use wearable sleep sacks or swaddles instead of loose blankets. Dress your baby in light layers suited to the room temperature.
🔄 Always Place Baby on Their Back
Back sleeping is the safest position for newborns and infants. Avoid tummy or side sleeping until your pediatrician says otherwise.
🌡️ Maintain a Comfortable Room Temperature
Keep the nursery cool but not cold (between 68–72°F / 20–22°C). Overheating can increase SIDS risk.
🪟 Use a Monitor & Keep the Room Near You
Having baby’s crib in your room for the first 6 months to 1 year is recommended. Use a baby monitor to stay connected without disturbing their sleep.
🚭 Avoid Smoke Exposure
Keep your baby’s environment smoke-free — smoking increases SIDS risk dramatically.
